Benefits of Stainless Steel

Stainless steel sinks are becoming more and more popular, but other than the beauty of them, do you know the benefits of stainless steel? Elkay explains the benefits of its stainless steel sinks.

  • Stainless steel is an extremely tough material, more durable than porcelain or cast iron. It doesn't chip, crack or nick.
  • Elkay stainless steel doesn't rust, stain or fade because of the type of steel used. They use the perfect combination of chromium and nickel, resulting in superior corrosion resistance.
  • Stainless steel "gives" a little, so when you drop a dish the likeliness of breakage is reduced.
  • When cleaned with household cleanser and a soft towel, it keeps its original luster.
  • Stainless steel offers greater bowl capacity. To determine sink size, bowl depth, taper and radius are the three basic sink measurements. Depth is the distance from the top of the rim to the bottom of the sink next to the drain. Bowl taper is the inward slope of each side of the sink from rim to bottom. Radius is the measure of the bowl's corners & bottoms where the sides and bottom meet. The point to remember is this: the deeper the bowl, the straighter the slope, the smaller the radius, the more useful the sink capacity.
  • It complements any décor with its clean lines, reflecting surrounding colors and patterns.

What's in a gauge? The thickness of the steel is called gauge. The thicker the steel, the less susceptible it is to denting, bowing and noise transmission. It may seem confusing at first, but the thicker the steel, the lower the gauge. Elkay sinks are made in either 18 or 20 gauge steel (18 gauge being the thicker of the two.) This is more than sufficient thickness for residential use.
